Oxford University, one of the oldest universities in the world, invited Square Circle to create and install an inspiring environment for students and staff alike in the School of Geography and The Environment faculty – which embraced its legacy whilst being practical and modern.

THE CHALLENGE

School Of Geography

 

The School of Geography wanted to transform its commonplace white walled shared spaces into surroundings that could excite and energise visitors, staff and students. They wanted to bring out the heritage of the School and let people know what it had accomplished over the years.

 

The School has a number of different stakeholders representing both the faculty and student body, and each had to be equally represented as did the overarching umbrella brand of the University.

THE SOLUTION

Our first undertaking was to thoroughly understand the scope of the work. We wanted to know exactly who the various stakeholders were and what they wanted to achieve through the project. We made ourselves familiar with the University’s brand guidelines and communication policies.

And then we researched the history, activity and achievements of the School itself. Armed with this information our design team produced colour schemes, wall designs and environmental graphics that not only made the spaces more vibrant but by including facts, statistics and visualisations told the story of the Schools heritage and successes.

 

To complete the project we appointed and worked with a third party installation firm to execute our ideas on site.

THE RESULT

The School was delighted with the result. A once dull, academic space had been dynamically changed, with floors and offices being visually distinctive which not only aided in navigation but gave each department a personality and sense of ownership. The Oxford University brand had been strictly adhered to, yet the specific needs of School’s four research centres had been met.
